History
Of the Biewers

The Biewer, a tri-colored toy terrier, is quickly finding its way into the hearts of dog lovers everywhere with its lighthearted, whimsical child-like attitude. The Biewer is equally as good with children and with other dogs of all sizes. Each Biewer has unique and individual personality traits. As a breed, the Biewer is confident, happy, and is fun loving and even tempered. The Biewers are neither yappy nor fragile—but love to be a lap dog as well as your companion on a walk
The Biewer first originated in the United States in 2003. With their arrival in the U.S., came conjecture and questions about the Biewers’ heritage. Mr. and Mrs. Biewer bred, raised and showed Yorkshire Terriers for 20 years in Germany. January 20th, 1984 the first blue, white and gold Biewer was whelped and named Schneeflocken von Friedheck. This is believed to be the beginnings of today’s Biewer Breed.
Mr. Biewer spent 5 years selectively breeding his foundation dogs to establish and breed true to a standard that distinctly became the registered Biewer Yorkshire Terrier a la Pom Pon. Mr. Biewer signed a standard for this wonderful new breed in 1989. The short standard described a Yorkshire Terrier’s coloring as White-Blue-Gold.
Mr. and Mrs. Biewer reign on the Biewer breeding programs in Germany, made obtaining their quality breeding dogs both hard to come by and expensive. Mr. Biewer died in 1997 and Mrs. Biewer discontinued their breeding program.
The American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) in 2008 accepted the Biewer as a rare breed shown in the Toy Companion Group. The Biewer also is accepted in the International All Breed Club Association (IABCA) and North American Kennel Club (NAKC) rare breed dog shows.
As the Biewers become more accepted and noticed in the ring, it will proceed towards recognition and acceptance by the UKC and/or the AKC. It is exciting to watch the Biewer history as it continues to be written.
